Christoph Jeloschek

Christoph Jeloschek first came to the Netherlands for a European student exchange program in 1998/1999. After completing his law studies at the University of Vienna in his native Austria, he returned to the Netherlands to start a four-year Ph.D. program at the University of Utrecht. In addition to this program dealing with the emergence of a European Private Law, he also took part in the so-called European Civil Code project, where he worked on drafting common rules on specific contracts, such as sales, services and commercial long-term contracts (commercial agency, distribution and franchising).

Upon receiving his doctorate in January 2004, he was offered a position as a lecturer & researcher at the University of Utrecht. In this position, he shifted his attention to teaching Dutch private law to Dutch students in their native tongue. He also continued to do research and to publish in the field of European Private Law, which, after years of attracting merely academic interest, is now being sponsored by the European Commission as a serious way forward for European legislation in the field of private law.

After years of research, however, Christoph decided to take on the new challenge of becoming a practising attorney in the Netherlands. Since joining Kennedy van der Laan in October 2005, he has put his comparative law background (in particular as regards contract and consumer law), his language skills and his considerable flexibility in adapting to new to good use in our competition law and information technology practice groups.
